Why We Run

History of Run Like a Girl

For the past 6 years, this event has encompassed our mission of empowering homeless individuals and families. Run Like a Girl is another way to help build confidence, strength, and balance, helping to prepare our residents for life’s many challenges.

The term, like a girl, used to be considered an insult.  But over the years, like a girl has evolved, just like our hope for the individuals we serve. To Run Like a Girl means you can be fast, strong and beautiful all at the same time.  In 2014, throw like a girl meant pitch a 70 mile-per-hour fastball in back-to-back shutouts in the Little League World Series like the 13 year old girl from Pennsylvania, Mo’ne Davis. In 2015, in a Super Bowl commercial, a feminine product company brought like a girl to a national level when they changed the conversation in 60 seconds.  To Second Step Housing, it has always meant progress. While building homes, we are building strong families, giving hope and inspiration.

History of Second Step Housing

Second Step Housing began in 1995 because a group of concerned community members saw a need for safe, affordable housing for homeless women and children; short-term shelters did not give women enough time to adequately address problems and overcome barriers. A longer, more stable living situation was needed. With help from the County, a two-year transitional housing program under the name of YW Housing was started with one house serving three women.

Today, Second Step Housing serves more than 450 individuals and families annually and has developed and manages 12 transitional housing properties and 42 units of affordable housing. We provide safe, affordable housing, case management and educational opportunities to adults, children and families who are working towards self-sufficiency. The agency partners with other nonprofits, local businesses, community members, and clients to help meet the housing needs of the community.

Second Step Housing is a community based 501(c)(3) nonprofit whose mission is to empower homeless individuals and families with opportunities that foster self-sufficiency through affordable housing partnered with community services.  We ask for your support of those we serve who are trying in every way possible to make every “step” count.
